Summary

In the focus of the new novel by ANATOLY AZOLSKY “Colonel Rostov” is an attempt on Hitler’s life committed in July, 1944. Philosophy of a conspiracy and its practice on mysterious ways of History are perhaps the main theme of the work.

IRINA MAMAEVA. Gye-Land. A long short story.

These strong (ex-Soviet) old women managed to overcome everything: famine, cold, the post-war disruption. But they turned out to be quite helpless against simple “small lilac flowers” which are traitorously overrunning their lives, their memory, their minds.

In NADEZDA MALTZEVA’s verses every emotion is a tensile test for the heart. Incredible drive of feelings, anguish which is searing the soul are characteristic of the poet’s style.

The last year has a sad prospect to remain in History of the North Caucasus as the “Year of Dagestan”, which has outnumbered even Chechnya by the acts of terrorism. Why did it happen particularly in Dagestan? Why in 2005 exactly? And how this tendency is inserted in today’s Russian development? These and attendant questions are discussed by SERGEY MARKEDONOV (“Dagestan”) and KAZBEK SULTANOV (“What Is Happening to Us?”).

MICHAEL RUMER-ZARAEV. Anno Domini — Lord’s Year (The Yaroslavl Diary).

It’s a versatile study of agricultural management in one of the central Russian regions where, by the author’s opinion, nothing has changed within the last 15 years. Until now the main agricultural units are kolkhozes which are finishing up the remains of the Soviet times while wealthy investors are snatching out the tibits of the agrarian complex founding large-scale effective agricultural companies.
